Beef Council Covers Range of Issues

PIERRE—(March 13, 2006) Reports on everything from the organization’s annual audit to Beef 20/20 to life as a National Beef Ambassador were on the agenda of the recent quarterly meeting of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) held March 7 in Ft. Pierre.

Directors listened to a report from Certified Public Accountant Ron Tedrow on the annual audit of the Beef Council’s finances. Tedrow reviewed the financial standing of the organization which collects the $1-per-head beef checkoff in South Dakota .

SDBIC directors also had an opportunity to hear the presentation that helped Amanda Nolz win the title of National Beef Ambassador. This Mitchell High School senior and South Dakota Beef Ambassador brought back the national title after a competition in Texas in November 2005. Since then Nolz has been traveling the country on behalf of the beef industry and the beef checkoff. SDBIC President Roger Gerdes presented Nolz with a check from the organization for $500 to help cover expenses while traveling. The SDBIC also helps fund the South Dakota Beef Ambassador contest.

Christi Hendrickson, a consultant for the SDBIC, updated directors on her experience at the Beef 20/20 Seminar held this winter at South Dakota State University and funded by the SDBIC. The three-day event provides beef producers with hands-on learning activities involving live cattle and carcasses. The goal of the annual event is to help beef producers effectively develop an understanding of factors that create value differences among beef cattle. According to Hendrickson, the seminar was an intense and very informative experience.

In other business SDBIC directors passed revisions to the organization’s policy book and reviewed promotion and research projects.

The SDBIC is comprised of representatives from eight agricultural organizations: SD Beef Breeds Council, SD Cattlemen’s Association, SD Cattlemen’s Auxiliary, SD CattleWomen, SD Farm Bureau Federation, SD Farmers Union, SD Livestock Market Association, and SD Stockgrowers Association.
