Beef Council to Elect New President September 24

PIERRE (September 12, 2005)—A new president of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) will be elected during the organization’s annual meeting Saturday, September 24.

Nancy Montross, a DeSmet beef producer, will step down after two one-year terms leading the council which collects and distributes the $1-per-head checkoff in South Dakota . Other officers to be elected during the meeting include vice president, treasurer and a national director.

The 24-member council, made up of three representatives from eight state agricultural organizations, will approve a budget and discuss other business related to promotion, research or educational projects which can be funded with checkoff dollars. The SDBIC retains up to 50 cents of the $1-checkoff collected on each beef animal sold in South Dakota for in-state projects and forwards the remaining funds to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board where it is used on national programs.    
            The SDBIC will also be honoring the 2005 Prime Promoters at a special luncheon that same day. David King of Platte , the Aberdeen Livestock Sales Co., and the Chamberlain Kiwanis Club will be recognized for contributions in promoting beef and the beef industry. They join a long list of individuals, organizations and businesses selected as Prime Promoters throughout the years.

The annual meeting begins at 9 a.m., and the Prime Promoter Luncheon begins at 11:45 a.m. Both are open to the public and will be held at the Brookings Inn. Persons interested in attending the luncheon must contact the SDBIC office ahead to purchase the $10 ticket by calling 605-224-4722.

The meetings and luncheon are being held in conjunction with the Beef Bowl at South Dakota State University . The annual Beef Bowl activities includes a 4:30 p.m. Beef Bowl Barb ecue and a 7 p.m. SDSU Jacks vs. Cal-Poly football game on the SDSU campus.

The SDBIC is comprised of representatives from eight agricultural organizations: SD Beef Breeds Council, SD Cattlemen’s Association, SD Cattlemen’s Auxiliary, SD CattleWomen, SD Farm Bureau, SD Farmers Union, SD Livestock Market Association, and SD Stockgrowers Association.
