Purchasing Seasonal Produce

Purchasing Seasonal Produce

Summer is here! Many are taking advantage of produce within a garden or at their local farmers' market.  Knowing what fruits and vegetables are in season can be beneficial from an economic standpoint as well as taste.  Seasonal produce can be acquired from a variety of sources, such as having your own garden or community garden, UPick farms, farmers markets, being part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group, as well as the grocery store. Many times, local grocery stores will also offer in-season produce at a cost-effective price.

The United States Department of Agriculture provides a seasonal produce guide, which is a great resource to utilize so you have an idea of what produce is likely to be in season.

If you enjoy fresh produce, take advantage of it; however, keep in mind, frozen foods are nutritious as well since they are picked and packed at their seasonal peak. Many times, frozen foods offer cost savings as well.

This Sirloin with Sugar Snap Pea and Pasta Salad recipe from BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com is one of my all-time favorite summer recipes. It’s a delicious way to utilize in-season peas, tomatoes, and pair them with beef for a nutrient-rich recipe.
