PIERRE, SD - Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed May as Beef Month to show his support of South Dakota's beef industry which is home to more than 15,000 beef producers and 4 million head of cattle. The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture organize the proclamation each year. The SDBIC has events and promotions underway to celebrate what's become a state tradition. A wide variety of social media, retail and other promotions are planned throughout May, including the #MooovingMonday and #SizzlingSaturday challenges.
SDBIC President Eric Sumption and Executive Director Suzy Geppert kicked off the campaign by partnering with KOTA TV to highlight area ranchers through a weekly beef series."This month-long celebration is a great platform to kick-off grilling season," states Geppert. "Beef continues to be king of the grill with ground beef making up 51% of total beef sold during the summer months and the Ribeye steak topping the chart on Memorial Day. A major focus this year is our 'Families Feeding Families' campaign. Consumers are consistently telling us they want to know the story behind their food."
South Dakota beef producers will also take to the airways this month to highlight several demand-building projects funded with the state's beef checkoff. SDBIC President, Eric Sumption states, "Our producers want to know where their checkoff is going and our role as the beef council is to provide them opportunities to see their checkoff in action."
In cooperation with Ag United, consumers will be treated to a progressive dinner at the annual Rapid City Beef Crawl on Monday, May 7. The event is designed to give consumers the chance to sit down with beef producers and learn about modern beef production. Likewise, cattle producers have the opportunity to learn more from attendees about what they really look for when making beef what's for dinner. Additionally, retailer partners as well as Team Beef members were treated to May Beef Month toolkits to help promote beef. For a full list of programs, promotions and events, visit our Facebook page or website at sdbeef.org.
